Ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and assisted stretching that support your adjustment.
Dr. Daniel Turner, DC · Updated June 2026
Adjustments treat the joint, but healing tissue often needs more. Our offices use physiotherapy modalities alongside hands-on care: therapeutic ultrasound to promote circulation and soften dense tissue, electrical muscle stimulation to calm spasm and interrupt pain signaling, and post-isometric relaxation (PIR) stretching to restore length in guarded, shortened muscles.
These are not add-ons for their own sake. Your doctor selects modalities based on what your exam shows: ultrasound for deep soft-tissue work and stubborn tendon areas, electrical stimulation when muscle spasm keeps pulling a segment back out of balance, and PIR stretching when a muscle has shortened and guards against normal motion. Most are included within your visit as part of the treatment plan, and each one has a specific job in getting you back to full function.
Modalities are comfortable and take just a few minutes each. Ultrasound feels like a warm massage wand moving over the area. Electrical stimulation is a gentle tingling as pads cycle the muscle through light contractions. PIR stretching is active: you gently resist while the doctor guides the muscle to a new range, then relax as it lengthens.

Post-isometric relaxation is an assisted stretching technique. You gently contract a muscle against light resistance for a few seconds, then relax while the doctor guides it into a longer range. The contract-and-release cycle lets guarded muscles lengthen further than passive stretching alone.
A gentle tingling or light muscle flutter under the pads. It is not painful, and we set the intensity to your comfort. Most patients find it relaxing, and it helps calm spasm and pain signaling around an irritated area.
No. Imaging ultrasound takes pictures; therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to gently warm and stimulate deeper tissue, promoting circulation in areas that are slow to heal. You feel a warm wand moving over the skin, nothing more.
Modalities are typically part of your treatment plan rather than surprise add-ons. We explain your plan and any costs up front before care begins, and we never sell packages.
