Chiropractic Adjustments

Precise, gentle adjustments to restore joint motion and relieve pain.

Dr. Daniel Turner, DC · Updated June 2026

Quick answer

Chiropractic adjustments are precise, gentle, hands-on movements applied to the spine and joints to restore normal joint motion and relieve pain. At DT Chiropractic, our care is conservative, evidence-based, and drug-free, focused on helping you move and feel better without surgery. You can receive adjustments at our Canton, Cartersville, and Rome offices in North Georgia, with same- or next-day appointments available.

The chiropractic adjustment, also called spinal manipulation, is the cornerstone of what we do. When a joint in the spine or body becomes restricted, it can limit motion, irritate nearby nerves, and create pain and stiffness. A precise, controlled adjustment restores that motion, takes pressure off the surrounding tissue, and helps your body move and feel the way it should.

How does chiropractic adjustments work?

Our doctors are trained in a range of techniques, from traditional hands-on (diversified) adjusting to gentle, low-force methods like drop-table and instrument-assisted adjusting, so your care is matched to your body, your condition, and your comfort. Adjustments are not limited to the spine: we also adjust and mobilize the shoulders, hips, knees, and other joints. It is a safe, non-surgical, drug-free approach, and every plan starts with a thorough exam so care is targeted and appropriate for you.

At your visit we first assess how your joints move and where the restriction is. The adjustment itself is quick and usually painless, you may hear a soft "pop," which is simply gas releasing from the joint, not bones cracking. Many patients feel relief and looser motion right away. We then pair the adjustment with soft-tissue work and simple exercises so the results hold.

Frequently asked questions

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes. After a thorough exam to make sure it is appropriate for you, adjustments are a safe, well-studied way to relieve pain and restore function. Serious complications are rare, and we tailor the technique, including gentle, low-force options, to your body and comfort.

Does an adjustment hurt?

Most patients feel relief, not pain. You may hear or feel a soft "pop" as pressure releases from the joint, that is normal and not painful. If you prefer, we can use gentle, low-force techniques that produce no popping at all.

What is the popping sound?

It is called cavitation, a small release of gas from within the joint as motion is restored. It is not bones cracking or anything grinding, and it is not a measure of how effective the adjustment was.

How many adjustments will I need?

It depends on your condition, how long it has been present, and your goals. After your exam we will give you a clear plan and re-evaluate as you progress, always aiming to get you better as efficiently as possible, with no long-term contracts.

What the research says about adjustments

Spinal manipulation is one of the most studied treatments in musculoskeletal care, and the modern evidence base is solid. A systematic review in JAMA pooled randomized trials of spinal manipulative therapy for acute low back pain and found statistically significant improvements in both pain and function, with no serious treatment-related harms across more than 1,700 patients. For chronic low back pain, a BMJ review of nearly 50 trials found manipulation produces improvements similar to other recommended therapies, with the practical advantage of being drug-free. And the American College of Physicians clinical practice guideline places spinal manipulation among the recommended first-line, non-drug options for low back pain.

The honest summary: adjustments are not magic, and no credible doctor promises instant cures. They are a well-supported tool for restoring motion, reducing pain, and getting people moving again, which is exactly how we use them.

What an adjustment feels like

Most patients feel firm, quick, comfortable pressure, sometimes with the familiar pop as gas releases within the joint. That sound is not bones cracking; it is the same harmless cavitation as cracking your knuckles. Relief is often immediate but can also build over a day or two, and mild post-treatment soreness, similar to after a workout, is normal and short-lived. Techniques range from traditional hands-on adjusting to instrument-assisted and drop-table methods, and we match the technique to your body, age, and comfort. Patients who prefer not to be manually adjusted have gentler options; just ask.

Our approach

Adjustments at DT Chiropractic are one part of a plan, not the whole plan. Your visit typically pairs adjusting with soft-tissue work and specific exercise so relief becomes durable rather than temporary. We reassess as you go, tell you honestly what is and is not responding, and never sell long prepaid packages.
