Conservative, evidence-based care for tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and neck-related migraines — from our office near historic downtown Cartersville.
If your head has been pounding at the end of a long commute down I-75, or a tight band of pressure builds across your forehead after hours at a screen, the source may be lower than you think — in your neck and upper back. Headaches are one of the most common reasons people in Bartow County go looking for relief, and the encouraging news is that a large share of them are tension-type or cervicogenic, meaning they are driven by muscle tension and joint restriction in the neck rather than by anything inside the head itself. Our office on Stonewall Street, a short walk from the historic downtown Cartersville square, has served the area since January 2022 with a bilingual (English and Spanish) team and one simple promise: no sales, only exceptional care.
Chiropractic care is most useful for tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches — the two types most closely tied to the neck and upper back. Tension headaches feel like a dull, vise-like squeeze around the head and often follow stress, poor posture, or long static work. Cervicogenic headaches start in the neck and refer pain up into the back of the head, behind the eyes, or across one side. Many people who think they have frequent migraines actually have neck-driven headaches, or a mix of both. We also see patients whose migraines are reliably triggered by neck and upper-back tension; while we cannot cure migraine, easing that physical trigger can reduce how often attacks are set off. What we will not do is promise to "fix" every headache — some are vascular, hormonal, or medication-related and belong with your physician or a neurologist.
The top three vertebrae of the neck share nerve pathways with the base of the skull and the muscles that wrap around it. When those upper cervical joints are stiff or the surrounding muscles are chronically tight, the nervous system can refer that irritation upward and you feel it as a headache. This is why so many people describe their head pain as starting at the base of the skull and creeping forward. It is also why addressing the neck — rather than only reaching for another tablet — often changes the pattern. Our overview of headaches and migraines explains the mechanisms in more depth, and because the same muscle chain affects the jaw, our page on TMJ and jaw pain is worth a look if clenching travels with your headaches.
"Tech neck" is the everyday driver we see most. Bartow County has many Atlanta commuters and remote workers, and holding the head forward toward a phone or monitor for hours multiplies the load the neck muscles must carry. The result is a deep ache between the shoulder blades, a stiff neck, and tension headaches that build through the afternoon. The same forward-head posture sits behind a lot of neck pain and upper and mid-back pain, which is why we treat the whole region rather than chasing the headache alone.
We start with a thorough history and exam — never an adjustment first. The goal is to understand what type of headache you have and whether your neck is genuinely involved, and to screen for anything that needs a different kind of care. When the picture fits, conservative treatment may include chiropractic adjustments to restore motion in stiff cervical joints, soft-tissue and trigger-point work for the tight muscles at the base of the skull and across the shoulders, targeted stretches, and practical posture and ergonomic coaching for your desk, your car seat on that I-75 commute, and your sleep setup. Adjustments are recommended only after an exam confirms they are appropriate, and if a traditional adjustment is not a good fit — because of your age, bone health, anxiety, or the nature of your symptoms — we use gentle, low-force techniques instead. The honest aim is steady, measurable improvement and fewer headache days, not a guaranteed cure.
When a headache is an emergency. Some headaches need immediate medical attention, not a chiropractic visit. Go to an emergency room or call 911 for a sudden, severe "thunderclap" headache that peaks within seconds, the "worst headache of your life," a headache with fever and a stiff neck, a headache following a head injury, or any headache accompanied by confusion, fainting, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, vision loss, or seizures. These red flags are uncommon but must be ruled out first.
Conservative chiropractic and soft-tissue care can reduce the frequency and intensity of tension and cervicogenic headaches, improve neck mobility, and address the posture and muscle patterns that keep feeding them. It works best alongside the habits you control — hydration, sleep, stress management, screen breaks, and a workstation that does not force your head forward all day. What it cannot do is cure a primary migraine disorder, override a hormonal or medication-overuse cause, or substitute for a physician's workup when one is needed. We will tell you plainly if your headaches do not look neck-related, and we refer out promptly when that is the right call.

Chiropractic care does not cure migraine, but many people have migraines or headaches that are triggered or worsened by tension in the neck and upper back. When the neck is genuinely involved, easing that physical trigger can reduce how often attacks are set off. We will examine you first and tell you honestly whether your headaches look neck-related.
A tension headache feels like a dull, vise-like squeeze around the head and is usually linked to stress and posture. A cervicogenic headache starts in the neck and refers pain up into the back of the head, behind the eyes, or down one side. Both are closely tied to neck and upper-back muscles and joints, which is what conservative chiropractic care addresses.
We only recommend an adjustment after an exam confirms it is appropriate for your specific situation. If a traditional adjustment is not the right fit because of your age, bone health, anxiety, or symptoms, we use gentle, low-force techniques instead. Care is always conservative and evidence-based, with no guaranteed outcomes.
